Field Mapping
Are you looking to map out the physical characteristics of a new area, or do you need quick answers about what’s in an area? Seisland employs highly-skilled field mappers who can access virtually any terrain – creating superior field culture maps for seismic surveys, construction, pipeline locating, or powerline locating. We also keep all this data on file for future reference. Here’s something really unique about our approach to mapping: When mapping for purposes of doing a seismic survey, we always create the map first! We never try to make our surveyors map while they survey. Why? Because having a map already in hand is safer, more efficient, prevents trespassing, and gives you, the client, more control over designing your own program. Think about this: If we get to the field and identify large exclusion areas (where source points are not permitted), then our surveyors aren’t just moving points to wherever they “think they should go.” Rather, our mapping team will have identified the exclusion items first and appropriate exclusion zones will have been created on the map in order that you, the client, will have the time to select the optimal positions when remodeling the source points. Then, when the survey team goes out, they have their task properly defined and mapped out, leaving no miscommunication about the job to be done. We actually find mapping first followed by survey to be EFFICIENT & EFFECTIVE for both the client and the survey contractor; this method can reduce the remodeling time/charges at the field level. Ultimately, the client has more control over the locations of both the source and receiver points and therefore will end up with a SUPERIOR FINAL PRODUCT.
Other important points about our Field Mapping Services:
- Seisland’s field mappers utilize orthophotos and government topographic datasets, and then augment them with data collected in the field (i.e. hazards, buried pipelines & utilities, buildings, water wells, oil/gas facilities, fences & gates and accesses, etc.).
- We utilize Trimble’s GPS ESRI extension and Trimble GeoXH handheld GPS units to map in critical obstacles (pipelines, wells, and buildings, power lines) to sub-meter accuracies. They are also used for the collection of less-critical data such as fences, gates, and trails. Seisland uses the latest computer systems and high-quality large format plotters to create quality maps right in the field. Updated digital data and Field Hazard/Culture maps are sent to the client and their geophysical/operational personnel on a daily basis; this gives the client the opportunity to optimize the coverage prior to or during the survey phase of the operation on their program.
- For bush projects, we employ highly skilled Mapping Coordinators and Line Pushes on our advance crew. They carefully scout the program in order to optimally position the lines, building the routes and maps for the GPS units utilized by the line cutting equipment or line slashers. These personnel take on the responsibilities of the crew supervision and safety of our clients’ third-party line cutting crews. We find that having the ability to create maps from proper preplanning information prior to any line-cutting taking place makes for an efficient field operation.
- Once the day’s mapping/line-cutting/surveying is completed, the information is downloaded from the GPS units, processed and an updated map is created. New maps are plotted nightly and distributed each morning to all phases of the operation, as required. New routes are provided for the line cutting operation’s GPS units for the next day’s production; updated maps and digital data is sent to appropriate client and operational contacts, as required. This ensures valuable data is in the hands of our clients as quickly as possible for decision making purposes.
