Enhanced Surveying Technologies

Years ago, we made a decision to build our capabilities to be able to efficiently map and survey all types of terrain. We have since developed and acquired the skill sets and technologies to accomplish our goal, following field procedure standards that ensure consistency on all our deliverables. The following is an overview:

GPS (Global Positioning Systems) Surveying: In cases where satellite reception is accessible, Seisland utilizes the Leica Viva GNSS and GX1230GG dual frequency receivers which can provide centimeter accuracy depending on the satellite reception.

INS (Inertial Navigation System) Surveying: This is one of the most specialized services we offer: accurate surveying where satellite reception is blocked or compromised by obstructions.

BENEFITS OF INS:

  • Survey unusual environments accurately and cost effectively: This means we can survey all types of terrain, even mountainous, heavily canopied areas where GPS technology would not be optimal due to poor satellite reception. INS can even be utilized in environments where satellite reception is NOT available; environments such as underground mines, structures, urban canyons or tunnels.
  • Cost savings: INS technology also means that as a client you do not require LiDAR data for your program. In some instances, pre-flagging, chaining, and surveying can be performed in one pass which can provide field-labour savings.
  • INS uses accelerometers, gyroscopes, and complex internal algorithms to sense motion – and gives excellent results where GPS surveying would be impossible (we even used them in an underground mine shaft!). This technology is so specialized that our four INS backpack units are registered with the Federal Government of Canada (Controlled Goods Directorate)… and in fact we are the only owners of this backpacked technology in Canada.

RTK (Real Time Kinematic) Surveying and Barometry: This is another specialized technique, ideally suited for tackling patchy, medium to heavily canopied areas. At Seisland, we have developed methodologies to integrate barometry instrumentation with GPS. We then apply sophisticated processing algorithms to achieve required industry accuracies under such conditions.

Support Equipment

At Seisland, we provide on-site technical support trailers for GPS/INS surveys, and to minimize downtime. To eliminate snowplowing for the survey operation, the survey crews utilize tracked ATV’s and UTV’s. To ensure safety and to minimize downtime, we employ a licensed mechanic to service our fleet of up to 20 4×4 Vehicles, 50 ATV’s, 20 UTV’s, 30 Trailers and 10 Snowmobiles. The ATVs and UTVs can be equipped with tracks or wheels depending on the ground conditions.

Employees are provided with the latest computers, printers and software to accomplish timely processing and transmittal of the data to the client. To enhance safety and productivity, employees are equipped with cell phones and PDA’s. This direct communication capability is an important safety feature for employees working in remote areas
